Quality Management and Environmental Performance

Klaipedos energija AB, as a major heat producer and supplier in the city of Klaipeda, tries to draw up a new environmental strategy. In 2006 Klaipedos energija AB became the first Lithuanian heat producer to be awarded management quality certificate ISO 9001 and environment protection management certificate ISO 14001.

The company’s goal is to make environmental issues to be an integral part of the company’s activity and directly or indirectly involve all employees, contractors, independent producers, the city municipality and the population. The integrated quality and environmental management system deals with all major activity spheres of the company, including heat generation, transmission and sales, production of electricity, maintenance of heating premises and hot water systems. The company’s environmental focus is to save and develop the most rational and long–term, centralised approach to modern technologies and equipment that could be applied in heat production, supply and consumption. Efficient concumption of energy and natural resources, strictly following environmental legislation requirements, constant environmental inspection and improvement of environmental conditions of the company would enable to decrease the company’s harmful environmental impact. The present certified quality management system means that the company complies with the International ISO 9001 requirements and standards and the company’s management system is constantly audited and enhanced.

The recertification audit of the management system in January 2009 proved the system to be still efficient and the independent auditors prolonged validity of the certificates to February, 2012.

The company’s environmental goals are as follows:

ensure and improve security of operation and equipment;
efficient utilisation of natural resources and auxiliary materials;
applying of various measures that enable to reduce emission of hazardous substances;
apply priority to ecologically clean fuel;
implement waste management measures and utilisation of second – hand waste;
implement measures for improving environmental awareness of employees and the company’s environmental performance;
instruct clients, contractors and suppliers on implementation of environmental management system as well as environmental requirements of the company;
give reporting to the population about effective environmental improvements in the company;
ensuring constant improving of the environmental performance of the company, introducing up-to-date environmental policy and certified environmental management system.
